8 Natural Ways to Reduce Migraines

“Give yourself the same care and attention that you give to others and watch yourself bloom.”

I have struggled with migraines ever since I can remember. I have seen many different doctors, natural path as well as neurologists. The one thing they all had in common was the conclusion that there just isn’t enough research to know why some people get migraines. I’ve written about my struggle before (you can read about that here), but today I wanted to share more about the natural ways I’ve been trying to reduce the amount of migraines I get per month.

This post is sponsored by MigShield, but all opinions are mine.

1)  Studies have shown that adding Magnesium to your diet can help reduce your migraines. I had heard this many times before but was a little weary that something so simple would help me. When Quantum Health contacted me to try their Magnesium supplement MigShield, I figured I had nothing to loose, especially since I was exhausting all of my migraine prescription options. Plus, I would do anything to try to be a better mom and wife with less painful days.

MigShield contains 200mg of Magnesium, 200mg of Riboflavin and 75mg of Coenzyme. I started taking 2 tablets, once a day, approximately two months ago. I kept track of my migraines, documenting when I got them, how long they lasted and if I was seeing any improvements.

Many people warned me that I wouldn’t see a difference right away, that I needed to get it into my system for at least a month before I saw any difference. Well, those people were correct. The first month I started taking the magnesium I did not see a difference, I still got a pretty bad migraine mid-month. BUT as I continued to take MigShield on a daily basis, the following month I DID SEE A DIFFERENCE.

The second month I only got one small headache and was able to take an over the counter medication and it went away immediately. I would call that success! I am so thankful that I added MigShield to my daily care, it’s so simple, but has made a big difference.

2) Making sure you are getting enough SLEEP is crucial!! I always notice a difference in my overall health and well being when I am not getting enough sleep. Sleep is your body’s way of refueling and recovering from the day, if I am not getting enough of it I find that it can most definitely lead to a migraine. So make sleep a priority, even if it means you don’t get the dishes done or the laundry put away. I can guarantee you that your kids would rather a happy healthy parent than a perfectly clean house.

3) Try the Elimination Diet. I recently discovered that I have an intolerance to gluten so I decided to have a food allergy test done to make sure I wasn’t missing anything else. The test was very enlightening and made me realize that the foods I eat also have a lot to do with my migraines. You don’t have to have an actual test done to find out which foods your body doesn’t love, you can try the elimination diet. Basically, you cut out all foods that may be problematic; dairy, gluten, sugar, alcohol, etc…then after a good two weeks of clean eating you can add one of those food groups back into your diet to see if you have a reaction to it. If you have a reaction you may want to consider eliminating that food from your diet permanently.

4) Give Chiropractic Care, Acupuncture, or Message Therapy a try. I have had numerous suggestions for all of these options and although I haven’t gone the acupuncture route I do highly suggest chiropractic care and message therapy. I notice a huge difference when my alignment is on track and I don’t have any huge knots in my neck/shoulder area. I especially suggest finding a chiropractor who specializes in BioPhysics and can give exercises based on actual x-rays (more on this at a later date).

5) I was super skeptical about Essential Oils, but over the last year I have been using them more and more. The combination that I put together, either in a diffuser or in a roller is lavender, peppermint and frankincense. This particular group of oils can help take the sting off of a migraine. I also suggest using the frankincense daily on the back on your neck, it can help in managing the migraines as well.

6) Make sure you are getting Regular Exercise and/or Stretching. I know this might seem like a no-brainer, but I always feel so much better when I get a few work outs in during my week. Even if that means a quick 15 minute YouTube video at home or a 10 minute stretch before I go to bed. All of these things add up to a healthier lifestyle.

7) Do your best to avoid well known triggers. For me, I have learned that I have different triggers that could cause a migraine. Sometimes too much sun, too much screen time, certain smells like a strong cologne or perfume, wearing something too tight on my head, or even not eating right away when I get hungry can lead to a migraine. More recently I have noticed that wine (which I hardly ever drink) can also lead to a migraine, even if I am drinking plenty of water with it. If you start to notice these triggers you need to avoid them.

8) Hydrate!!! Something so simple, yet so important. Water!! Drink it, lots of it. Stay hydrated. I never leave home without my water bottle. I also don’t drink soda, sweetened drinks or other types of caffeine. I have always said I would rather eat my calories than drink them, so I stick with water.;) Some people say caffeine actually helps their migraines, know how it effects your body and do what you think is best.

Overall, I am super happy with my new regime, which includes taking the MigShield daily. Who knew something so simple could have such a big impact on my health? I will continue to take this supplement in addition to following these other suggestions to help me in managing my migraines.

These are great ideas! I have almost the same migraine triggers as you. I think Chiropractic has made the most difference in preventing them but if I don’t drink enough water and decide to have the tiniest bit of caffeine I’m doomed!

Yes, chiropractic care has been a huge help for me as well. But definitely look into the magnesium, it’s also worth a shot.
