A Fun & Easy Teen Birthday

Looking for a fun and easy teen birthday idea? Then look no further, I’ve got just the answer for you. Our son recently turned 13 and wanted an activity that wasn’t too childish, but also not boring. So we landed on the idea of an escape room with a small group of friends, then back to our house for food and swimming. Here’s a peek at what we did and some extra inspiration for your own celebration.

Escape Room at the Irvine Spectrum

We kicked things off at The Escape Game at the Irvine Spectrum, one of our favorite spots for group fun. We’ve done a few of their rooms before, and every time it’s a blast. We were hosted, but we would have picked this location regardless. This time, we chose the “Playground” room, which is designed with younger players in mind — perfect for a group of 13-year-olds. The room can hold up to 10 people, one of their largest rooms.

The kids worked together to solve puzzles, crack codes, and complete challenges before time ran out. It was a complete nail biter for us with only 43 seconds left on the clock! What I love about this experience is that it’s interactive, team-oriented, and screen-free fun. It’s also something different than your typical birthday outing, which made the day feel extra special.

If you’re near an Escape Game location, it’s definitely a birthday win for teens and tweens alike. You can check out our Instagram video of our experience HERE. They have locations all over the U.S. so make sure to go check them out.

Birthday Decor: Simple but Fun

After the escape room, we headed home for swimming and a backyard party. I kept the decorations simple but still festive. The highlights were:

  • Balloon Arch in green, black, and white
  • Giant Light-Up “13” Numbers that made a perfect backdrop for photos (not the greatest quality, but you can’t tell in the photos)
  • 13-Themed Plates & Napkins (all ordered from Amazon for quick and easy setup)

Sometimes the simplest touches make the biggest impact, and these decorations set the scene without overwhelming the day. Shop all of them HERE (affiliate links).

Pool Party Vibes

Once the kids arrived back at the house, they jumped straight into the pool. Swimming is such a classic party activity, and it’s perfect for burning off energy after being “locked” in an escape room. We kept food simple — pizza, chips, fruit and veggies and of course donuts — which was exactly what a group of hungry teens wanted. We also moved the decor outside for a few extra pictures.;)
