Getting invited to the DisneySMMC

“Never forget who you are.” -Lion King

There are NO magic words I’m going to tell you, in fact some of you probably already know most of these things already. But I wanted to share my two-cents on how I think you should go about trying to be noticed by the wonderful people who invited me to join them on the Disney Social Media Mom Celebration.

(I was invited to the conference and paid for my ticket, but it was at a discounted price. ALL OPINIONS are my own.)

These are the things that I was trying to do before I got invited to go…

1 STOP TRYING TO BE ANYONE BUT YOU (everyone else is already taken)! Know who you are as a writer/blogger/social media influencer and don’t try to emulate someone else.

2 You DO NOT have to be posting Disney content EVERYDAY, or even be a “Disney blogger.” BUT it is probably a good idea to love Disney and talk about it in an organic way that suits your brand.

3 You DO NOT have to have a million followers. Contrary to popular belief I met quite a few bloggers who were actually quite small, or who hadn’t been around very long, so try not to obsess over that.

4 Try not to get all creepy, stalking the people who have gone. We do not know how we got invited, it is part of the Disney magic!!;) I honestly do not know how they found me, but they did and I am so very blessed.

5 It is probably a good idea to stay up to date with what is going on in your nearest Disney park or with Disney related news. Maybe write a post or two regarding something Disney. If you are a crafter, make a Disney craft. If you are a food blogger, make some Disney inspired food. If you are a fashion blogger, try doing a post on the latest Disney styles. I think you get my drift here.

6 Make sure to follow the Disney Parks Blog and Disney Parks Mom Panel on social media. Not only do they have the best info but sometimes they have fun meet ups for you to socialize with other Disney fans. Engage with their posts, maybe retweet some of their information from time to time.

7 If you already have lots of Disney content on your blog or social media try emailing it around. Sometimes I will just go on a google hunt for PR or Media email address, do your own research! See what you can come up with and then email a nice letter and attach some of your writings.

8 Join a Facebook hopeful group. This is one that I enjoy and it is chalk full of people that are working their tales off, writing great Disney content on a regular basis. Read, support, encourage and get to know one another. It is not a competition, we are here to lift each other up. Within this group there might be Disney related Pinterest groups you can join or you could gather like-minded writers for a round up post for different Disney topics. Try this one or this one.

9 Try tagging different Disney related companies in your posts on social media. I always make sure I tag Disneyland, Disney Cruise or Walt Disney World whenever I post a picture of us at one of those locations. I don’t know if they really see those tags because I am sure they get so many, but I always think it is worth a shot.

10 Don’t get discouraged. I know you think it is easy for me to say that because I have gone, but let me be blunt with you. Yes, I had this incredible experience going to the conference and I am so thankful. But I still have my own setbacks. I still hunt for email addresses and get told no all the time from different companies, or just never hear back. But I move on and try a different email or let it go and know God has my best interest at heart.

11 Slow your Roll. What do I mean? Slow down, take a step back and evaluate where you have been, where you are currently and where you would like to go. Be proud of how far you have come, evaluate your current status and write down both short term and long term goals, but don’t get caught up if those goals morph over time to something different.

12 Make sure your content is relatable, helpful or inspiring. In the end, you need to find joy in what you are doing and who you are helping. If you are so focused on getting an invite to a conference that is pretty top secret, you may be missing the big point. Ya know what I mean?
