“Play is the highest form of research.” -Albert Einstein

We have been fighting illnesses on and off all year which has made it difficult to be consistent with school attendance. I try to still incorporate learning through play on days that we miss school, but sometimes I don’t always know what I should focus on for each child. It was honestly perfect timing when ABCmouse reached out to me and asked us to try their free 30 day subscription.

Let’s face it, there are a lot of apps out there for kids, but there is something that sets ABCmouse above the rest. ABCmouse is meant to be used as an online learning program for children ages 2-8 in subjects of math, science, reading, social studies, art and music. They really understand each child’s developmental ages and what they should be focusing on for their grade. But even beyond that they also have ways to make each grade level easier or more difficult depending on your child and their strengths. There are books, games, puzzles, songs, music videos and even printables. My kids were having so much fun they forgot it was our “lesson plan” for the day.

Our son, age 6, is starting off in the ABCmouse app in the Kindergarten section. He missed the cut-off for kindergarten last year so he did Transitional Kinder and I love that it gave him extra time to grow. So whenever I can, I push the levels on his app to the most difficult to give him a little more challenge. I can even have the option to put him in the 1st grade category if I see that he is excelling quickly. Over the last few weeks Colton’s confidence has definitely grown when I show him that he is doing harder activities each time.

One of the things that Colton loves the most about the app is that it is based on a reward system. He does very well and is more driven to succeed when he knows there will be a prize at the end. As you go through different assignments and activities your child can earn tickets. These tickets store up and when they have enough your child can then get different items within the app. Maybe a different outfit for their avatar (that they can make look just like them). Or they can buy accessories for some of the other games.

Our daughter, age 4, currently in Pre-K, loves the app as well. She enjoys the puzzles and her favorite is having the books read to her while watching the words being highlighted as they go along. As a parent I think it is a great way for her to see the words, hear the words and start to make that connection for the next step of reading. Rosie was a little more hesitant when we first began because she didn’t have the same skills as her brother, but now she is showing him all of the new lessons she has accomplished on her learning path and how many tickets she has earned.

There are also so many different activities to do within the app, 850 lessons to be exact, so your kids will never get bored. I love that they even add holiday books and other fun games to play all the time. You can also set up time limits within the app so there is no argument when screen time is over. I also love that it is completely FREE of advertising! No pop up windows trying to get your kids to buy anything extra!! Parents can add up to 3 children on one account and it’s compatible on desktop and mobile.
