Top 5 Ocean View Walks in South Orange County

South Orange County is packed with coastal trails and bluff-top promenades that pair salty ocean views with easy-to-moderate walking. Whether you’re out with a stroller, bringing your dog, or chasing sunset photos, these are our top five favorite ocean view walks. They deliver fresh air and great scenery from Dana Point to San Clemente, and Laguna Niguel.

1. Salt Creek (Dana Point)

Why go: Classic bluff-to-beach views with wildflowers in season and plenty of ocean panoramas. Plus, access to the beautiful beach below.
Access & terrain: Mostly paved and stroller-friendly; some short stairs depending on route (you can easily avoid). Dog friendly paths and grass areas. Approx. 1.3-mile loop.
Tips: Park at the Salt Creek Beach parking lot ($1 per hour) or neighborhood access points. Great for sunrise or late-afternoon walks to avoid midday heat. Public bathrooms available. Parking can be very crowded on summer days, so plan accordingly.

2. Strands (Dana Point)

Why go: A mix of bluff trails and lower strand paths with dramatic cliffside sightings.
Access & terrain: Partially stroller and dog friendly (the upper parking lot level). Other portions include lots of steps and are not stroller or dog friendly, but worth the climb (and a great workout). Approx. 1.3-mile partial loop
Tips: Combine with a beach stop or picnic. Free parking lot. Public bathrooms available.

3. Badlands (Laguna Niguel)

Why go: Rugged coastal ridge lines and sweeping overlooks; excellent for walkers who want varied scenery.
Access & terrain: Mostly unpaved single-track and fire roads. Dog friendly on leash; I really wouldn’t bring the stroller for this one. Length varies, but under 2 miles either way you go.
Tips: Bring water and sun protection; sections can be exposed. Morning is best for cooler temps, but could get some morning ocean fog. You could go later for sunset views. Free street parking. No public bathrooms.

4. Sea Summit (San Clemente)

Why go: Neighborhood trails that connect parks, overlooks, and coastal viewpoints, great for quieter, local-feel walks. You can even watch the train go by, which is super fun.
Access & terrain: Mixed surfaces; many routes are dog-friendly and some are stroller-accessible depending on chosen path. Some paths have lots of stairs! Length varies.
Tips: Explore different connector trails to customize length. Good option for families who want shorter loops. Free neighborhood parking. Public bathrooms located near two different parks on trails.

Why go: Offers elevated overlooks and sweeping vistas of canyon meets ocean; a rewarding option for slightly longer hikes.
Access & terrain: Mixed: some paved sections and dirt trails. Many segments are stroller and dog friendly, though steeper parts may be challenging with a stroller. Length varies.
Tips: Park at trailhead on street (free). Plan for varied footing and pack water.
