Home Sweet Home

Our DIY House Demo

“Living through a home renovation is like living in the wild…you do whatever it takes to survive.”

For years we have been dreaming about remodeling our home, but there has always been something stopping us. When we first moved in we used all our savings to buy our home so remodeling was out of the question. Then we chose to travel and enjoy life as a newly married couple doing just a few small DIY projects here and there. A few years later kids started to come into the picture, which really halted all projects completely. Now, our youngest is almost 5 and our oldest is almost 7 and we figured it was finally time to take on the downstairs of our home.

We started with the idea that we wanted to rip out all of the old, very stained carpet. Then once we thought about it we realized that if you put in all new flooring you should really do new kitchen cabinets at the same time since you typically lay the cabinets on top of the hard wood floor. Which led us to a complete kitchen remodel, which also led to a bathroom remodel and eventually even led to a new staircase (since there was old, stained carpet on there too).

So here is a list of all of the projects about to get done…

  • All new flooring downstairs (bye bye carpet, hello water resistant vinyl plank).
  • Brand new staircase (goodbye carpet, hello solid white oak, custom steps and railings).
  • New kitchen cabinets (so long ugly brown wood, bonjour white shaker style).
  • Glorious porcelain countertops (adios old white tile with brown grout, hola white marble looking surfaces).
  • Brand new appliances (farewell dishwasher that doesn’t even clean dishes, electric stove that takes 15 minutes to boil a pot of water).
  • An entirely new downstairs bathroom (a half bath is now turning into a full bath, with walk in shower, new vanity & fixtures).

Not to mention we are knocking down a wall that used to separate the kitchen from the dining room, adding a peninsula/bar, moving the fridge and adding a coffee station, customizing an entire built in china hutch, all new fixtures, raising the ceiling in the kitchen and finishing off the vinyl plank flooring in the upstairs hallway as well.

Here is a video of our progress in the four days of our DIY house demo that my Hubby and Dad worked so hard on…

Have you ever done any home remodeling? Although we have done a few upgrades; new window’s, new doors, painted, even changed the outline of our roof, etc…this is definitely our biggest project to date. So if you have any tips for keeping our sanity, send them our way!;)

Wow. Wonderful job. So great to have a Prince/Fireman and an amazing dad/grandfather to help. Are you going to continue to do all the work yourself? If so, you are braver than I, I hire people because there is no way I could do it. I know that the new downstairs is going to be amazing…how exciting for you.

We have hired multiple people to help us throughout the project. My Dad is already back home and the hubs can’t do all the work.;)

We are hoping about 8 weeks, but I am gonna say that all the finishing touches will still be after that.
