The World Premiere of Mary Poppins Returns

“Nothing’s gone forever, only out of place.” -Mary Poppins Returns

In the third grade I remember each student got to have a day where they sat at the special red desk and was asked to share a little bit about themselves with the class. One of the topics the teacher had us share was the infamous question “what do you want to be when you grow up?” So when it was my turn I remember not being able to quite put my dreams into words, so I drew a picture. The picture had me, in a bright red, full length gown, standing on a red carpet. The teacher asked what my drawing meant and all I could come up with was that I wanted to walk the red carpet like all the movie stars.

Well, all my 3rd grade dreams came true when I was invited to walk the red carpet for the World Premiere of Disney’s newest film, Mary Poppins Returns. A film we have been so excited to see ever since Disney announced they were going to do a sequel (not a re-make). So I found the perfect red dress, the most handsome date (my husband) and we headed to Hollywood to see the movie at the world famous Dolby theater.

The red carpet was filled with poparattzi, characters from the movie, and the most beautiful cherry trees straight from the set of the movie.

Immediately following the movie the stars of the show got up on stage for a bow and seeing Dick Van Dyke in person might have been the highlight of my night (and that goes some because Matt Damon was sitting 6 rows in front of me). After all of that we were treated to a soiree that was so magical. There was amazing food, drinks, costumes from the movie, photo opportunities, kite & balloon making and much more…

It was such an amazing night, one that I will never, ever forget. Thank you to Disney for a beautiful film and for inviting me to be a part of such special evening.

Here is a little bit more about the movie…

Brief Synopsis– We all know and LOVE the classic movie Mary Poppins, but haven’t you ever wondered what happened to the Banks children? Well, now you don’t have to wonder. The movie opens when Jane and Michael are all grown up and are experiencing problems all of their own. Michael has children and is left to raise them on his own but is in need of some desperate help. Enter Mary Poppins. Once again, Mary comes to save the day with all new adventures. The music, the dancing, the creativity of it will leave you laughing, crying and wondering when you can see the movie again.

Even though the movie is set in the London Depression era, a lot of the topics are relevant to today’s issues that each of us face in different ways. Just as the original Mary Poppins movie seemed to withstand the test of time, so will this sequel.

Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins is absolute perfection. She does such an amazing job at an incredibly difficult pair of shoes to fill. I also thought Lin-Manuel Miranda did an excellent job as Mary’s side kick. Collin Firth is the epitome of a “bad guy” and Meryl Streep plays a fun new role as Topsy. I also fell in love with the grown up versions of Jane and Michael played by Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer.

What is a good age to see the movie?– This movie is definitely family friendly! If you only see one movie this year, it needs to be this movie. If you have a little one under the age of 2 they may have the wiggles the first 20 minutes or so before Mary Poppins arrives, then the movie really livens up!;)

Rating– PG

Length– 2 hours

Released to the theater– December 19th, 2018

Other Info– My favorite part might have been when Dick Van Dyke makes a cameo appearance and even dances a step or two. I seriously got teary eyed watching him be a part of this film. On the other side Julie Andrews does NOT make an appearance, which I was a little disappointed. But I heard that when she was asked about it and said she didn’t want this movie to be about her, that she wanted the focus to be on the new Mary Poppins, Emily Blunt. This truly will be a movie you watch with your kids for years to come!
